BLACK LIGHT SHINE:
On location with Omar in Puerto Rico, while working pre-production and scouting for the upcoming feature film shoot (Luna Rosa) - we created this video as an expression of pure love for the Bomba dance and the history, heritage and culture that surrounds it. I was able to be a part of the production. Shooting the traditional dance sequence first which comprises of the last half of the music video and short film that follows. The group features Dorayma Mercado on vocals who will go on to play the role of Marek in the film. To film the section that opens the film, we traveled to Loiza with our team and the scene came together organically with the local scene there for bomba regardless of our video shoot. The edit came together very quickly while in Puerto Rico staying in Bayomon, couple of nights on the laptop staying at his grandmother’s house and we had cut. Omar kept asking me to extend the ending, longer and longer, until we had almost 8 mins of the traditional bomba music. I enjoyed building that. - EDIT, ADAM THOMSON
GRAVEYARD LOVE
While in Puerto Rico, we continued the next day with our camera team, in 2 units and began to shoot the portraits for Graveyard love. Traveling to the still present destruction and aftermath of Hurricane Maria, the country side jíbaro, San Juan’s streets and the ever present shadow of US colonial reign. I was present for the shooting with the unit in san juan. A team of 4 of us drove around and very spontaneously the portraits came together, people has a beautiful enthusiasm and joy to share with the camera. We passed the material off to Tian Tang to sculpt a beautiful portrait of present day Puerto Rico. - AT
VIGIL
Weeks away from shooting Luna Rosa, in Mexico City - VIGIL is an interpretive dance performance video. The dancers were all performers cast to appear in various roles across the film Luna Rosa. The video doubled as a way for the crew of the film to get together before the film and shoot something together. It was a bonding experience full of optimism on the production side of things. The edit was quite challenging as we worked concurrently on the film’s production. Trading edits between Tian and I. One day in the first weeks of the films production Tian and I stayed late in the studio and shot the 2nd unit shots we interspersed here and use in the film. We were working out of the conference rooms of a hotel in Mexico City and in our editing room at the film stages to get this edit done while making the film.
ACOUSTIC VISUALIZERS
These four videos are designed to be “VISUALIZER” accompaniments to the tracks. The footage I used comes from the 2nd unit material I was shooting and directing on set for Luna Rosa. I edited a visualizer for every track on this album, and when played in order, the abstract progression of the visualizers is structured to mirror the feature film. However, at this moment, only 4 of the visualizers were released. -AT
To create the visual video campaign for The Mars Volta’s self-titled album, Omar Rodriguez Lopez opted not to turn the cameras on Cedric, himself or the rest of the band, but instead on to focus on his country, Puerto Rico. And in true ORL form, the overlap of projects (Film,”LUNA ROSA: LA 7a ASCENCIÓN DE ATABEY) cross-pollinates with the production of these videos, and the work of the film and the video campaign merge and blend in a natural, symbiotic way.
